The Virginia Tobacco & Health Research Repository, Inc. (VTHRR) was formed to provide access to data and bio-specimens that researchers, institutions, regulators and companies may require in order to investigate the relationships between smoking and tobacco use and human health indications. The core resource of the VTHRR is the Total Exposure Study, one of the largest studies on smoking patterns and tobacco use ever conducted in the United States, consisting of over 5,000 adult males and females, 21 years of age and older who were in generally good health and were enrolled from 39 investigative sites across the U.S. into various parallel investigative groups. Bio-specimens which were collected from study participants consist of urines, plasmas, RBC’s and PBMC’s.
The VTHRR will be filing for non-profit status with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501-c-3 organization and is governed by a 6 member independent Board of Directors representing major public academic research institutions in Virginia, public health laboratories and major non-profit medical centers.
