History

The Park was incorporated in May 1992 as a joint initiative of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), the City of Richmond and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Virginia BioTechnology Research Partnership Authority was also created in 1993 as an independent authority of the state with broad financing and development powers to implement the bold vision of creating a life sciences technology center of over 1.5 million square feet of research space employing over 3,000 scientists and engineers.

The Park officially opened in December 1995 with the completion of the Virginia BioTechnology Center, the state’s first incubator facility dedicated exclusively to the life sciences. BioTech One, the first multi-tenant lab and office building, was completed in early 1996 with occupancy by the first three private sector companies and two VCU research institutes.
